“What Would Jesus Do?”

One of the dumber arguments against pre-marital sex within Christianity is “Oh yeah, well what would Jesus do?”  Christians act as if Jesus would disapprove of pre-marital sex in our modern world because He cleary disapproved of it in the Roman times.  Of course, if we are to follow Jesus, what about Matthew 5:29-30?

29 If your right eye causes you to stumble, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. 30 And if your right hand causes you to stumble, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to go into hell.

Suddenly, we are not expected to take Jesus literally.  For those unfamiliar with the Bible (don’t worry, modern Christians haven’t read much of it either), Jesus set an impossibly high standard – and for a good reason!  We need Jesus as our Savior and only until we recognize the futility of our human nature can we realize why we need Him as our Savior.  Thus, Jesus shows us a beautiful image of perfection and we see just how desperate we are.  See John 12:47-48:

47 “If anyone hears my words but does not keep them, I do not judge that person. For I did not come to judge the world, but to save the world. 48 There is a judge for the one who rejects me and does not accept my words; the very words I have spoken will condemn them at the last day.”

Jesus expects us to fail with His standards and He doesn’t judge us for failure.  We are judged for refusing to accept Jesus for who He is – the one and only Lord and Savior.  Failing to obey Jesus does not result in Hell; failing to accept Jesus as your Lord and Savior does.

  1. I’ve read the bible 4 times

and I think Malachi 3:6 makes it clear that God never changes

God never changes, but the rules do.

      1. According to Malachi 4:4 they weren’t supposed to change as much as they have. That’s a human thing.

Well they did and they do. How many Jewish people are running around stoning people and taking slaves? Times change. Common sense. The rules don’t make you righteous and even if they did, you could never measure up. The gap of righteousness is infinite for everyone. So even the best Christian is just as wicked as Hitler in next to God’s perfection. Imputed righteous is the entire point. The rules are for order and simplicity, but cannot create the spiritual power of faith and honest effort.

Bingo; only to add to this, this blog assumes dispensationalist theology, which not all Christians accept. Miracles and speaking in tongues don’t happen anymore either.

Jesus was perfect. Hard to match that.
